Disclosing the Regular Driver to Your Vehicle Insurer

The identity of the regular driver is an important risk factor in vehicle insurance.
What happened?
The Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance considered a case where an insured submitted a claim for a stolen vehicle. The policy had been sold through the insured’s wife, who recorded herself as the regular driver.
After the vehicle was stolen, it emerged that the insured’s son-in-law was in fact the regular driver.
Why the claim was rejected
The insurer rejected the claim on the basis that the regular driver details had been misrepresented when the policy was sold.
Practical point
Policyholders should check that the regular driver is accurately disclosed. If the regular driver changes, the insurer should be informed.
