Tracker Requirements and Motor Vehicle Insurance Claims

Insurance cover often depends on the details provided when the policy is taken out. Tracker requirements are a common example.
What happened?
A consumer insured a newly acquired Toyota Quantum/HiAce against loss, including theft. In the insurance proposal, he was asked whether the vehicle was fitted with a tracker and answered “yes”.
About three weeks later, he submitted a claim of nearly R600,000 after alleging that the vehicle had been stolen in a hijacking.
Why the claim was rejected
After investigation, the insurer found no evidence that a tracking device had ever been installed. The tracker was a non-negotiable requirement under the policy.
Practical point
Vehicle owners should check that all security requirements in their policies are actually in place. A simple incorrect answer may place cover at risk.
