Why Regularly Reviewing Your Will Matters

Life changes. A will should change with it.

The issue

An outdated will may no longer reflect the people, causes or relationships that matter to you. It may also fail to deal properly with changes in your family, assets or personal circumstances.

Why reviewing your will matters

Updating a will can ensure that your legacy reflects your current wishes. It can also reduce uncertainty for family members and beneficiaries after death.

National Wills Week

The Law Society of South Africa runs National Wills Week each year, during which participating attorneys draft basic wills free of charge. Attorneys participating in the initiative may not insist on being appointed as executor.

Practical point

A will should be reviewed after major life changes and at regular intervals. The aim is simple: make sure the document still says what you want it to say.
